Had a fair amount of success as a Masters runner for most of my 40s. 

Short-Term Running Goals:

Have fun with running, explore more trails, stay healthy.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running and racing consistently for as long as I can. Find what is sustainable for me over the long run.

I teach AP European History and other courses at Alta High School. I coached the track and cross country teams at Alta for 16 years.

Or you could move back to SC, where we cancelled school yesterday because of a rainstorm. Really- no snow predicted, just a bit rainy and gusty resulted in no school.

The bit rainy was 5 inches at my house, though, so not bad for 12 hours.

I taught for 6 years in Greenville. Snow days were the best! Not only that, but when it would start snowing the principal would send everyone home. Good times.

Fun race on a challenging course. I didn't wear my watch because the course was very hilly and it was really windy - something I only discovered while warming up. I saw the start location on the Jordan River Parkway and assumed the race would be a flat out and back. But no, the course quickly exited the parkway and wound through a neighborhood along the river. So I decided I would just focus on the competition and not my time. So I was relly happy with my time and now wish I had worn my watch.

This race had a very appealing 10 am start time which I find to be the heart of civilized, especially in the winter.

Not a good race today and doubly disappointing because I had high expectations. I was hoping to run about one minute faster.

Splits were 6:17, 6:46, 6:59 and 46 seconds for the point one. Oh well, I guess they can't all be winners.

Couple things though...consciously or subconsciously, I've made 5ks the focus of my racing. If I'm going to continue with that I should probably throw some striders and faster running into my training every now and then. Also more running across earthly terrain and less treadmill running.

I will probably take the day off - maybe some walking if the weather is nice.

One of my former cross country runners and students from the class of 2008 took his own life over the weekend and I'm struggling to hold back the tears. He was a doctor at the George Washington University Medical Center and a graduate of BYU and the University of Utah School of Medicine. He was a joy to teach and coach.

Once it's public and in the newspapers I'll probably write more about him.

I went to Will's funeral today. Long, about two hours. Will had 5 brothers and sisters and they all spoke as well as both his parents and multiple officials of the church. The family was great though and I enjoyed their thoughts and memories of Will. It was also a bit of an Alta cross country reunion and I saw many old runners now in their mid 30s. Nice, except for the circumstances obviously. 

There was lots of honest talk about depression and the stresses associatiated with a medical residency. Will's dad chose to read the note Will left which was mostly addressed to his colleagues at the hospital where he worked. That will stay with me. Will was a thoughtful, decent, and accomplished young man.

It does become a bit frustrating that the "old chassis" is not operating with the same resilience and strength as it once did - even 10 years earlier, let alone 20. But you can be assured that you are probably way more fit than the average 59 year old!

Last night I was re-reading Jim Fixx's The Complete Book of Running and on my run today I was thinking about him and others like George Sheehan who discovered running in middle age in the 1970s and wrote about it with such enthusiasm. I mean, there aren't many more basic human activities that running but it basically remained undiscovered as an activity for the masses until the 1970s. That's remarkable isn't it?
