Keep running and racing consistently for as long as I can. Find what is sustainable for me over the long run.

I teach AP European History and other courses at Alta High School. I coached the track and cross country teams at Alta for 16 years.

Rob - I know that gradual realization all too well. I have gotten passed the sad part though.
One thing that helps is to look at age-graded calculations. Are your times in line with what you used to run at age 35 or 30 using that calculation? I realize it is a formula with some built-in assumptions, but I found that I am slowing appropriately for my age and in some cases running faster than my "younger self".
Additionally, there are a lot fewer of us old geezers still running; so there's that.
And also, as compared to the average runner in a 5k or a 10k, we are still faster than most of them even at our current ages.

I mean, I'm not blind to reality. I know I'm never going to run like I'm 20 again but I've always felt like I could turn back the clock 5 or 6 years with some smarter/harder training. But I guess I was training pretty hard 5 or 6 years ago so it's probably not possible.

Okay, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have strong efforts (races or otherwise) in you if it remains meaningful for you to push yourself to the edge. Presumably not every race you ran at 50, 40, or 30 was good, and you suffered in some and surprised the hell out of yourself in others. Whatever, dude (respectfully), I still tell random people stuff you told me nearly a decade ago. You may surprise yourself yet.
