Twelve miles around Sugar House.

I'm going to retire from serious, competative training and racing starting now. I decided that I can't be a great teacher and a great coach and a good family guy along with the hard training and racing. I'm making too many compromises. It's one thing too many at my age!

So excited to have made this decision. I feel like a weight has been lifted.

I'm still going to post here every day and race occasionally, but I'm not going to force anything or have goals. My competition goals will be channeled into my coaching.

I was kind of surprised to read your entry today, but it is a good idea to find a good balance with your running, coaching, teaching and most important family life. Finding that balance will remove a lot of stress, which will probably also help you improve performance in all of the above areas. Life is to be enjoyed and not to be stressed over.

Enjoy your running, but don't make it the most important thing in your life.

I feel I have also been hitting that same wall recently. Your entry today has given me a lot to think about.

Great. Maybe now you'll have time to run the Grand Canyon with me, and the bajillion other awesome trails around us. I'm on call all September out of Salt Lake City.

The challenge of balance. Sometimes running is not the most important thing. Not even close. In fact, it almost never is. Good luck with all your priorities.

From the outside looking in those look like great priorities to me. I am glad you are at peace with your decision.

Very respectable decision you made today. Best of luck to you!

Cool. Seems like mainly a mental transition - that you are at peace with - it was voluntary and not forced on you (as in an injury). Wisdom of your years of coaching and training at work.

So what youre saying is youre looking for new coaching challenges - cool. Once I get healthy and running again, I need a schedule that will get me from fat and mostly immobile to sub 57.5 in the 400 and sub 2:16 in the 800 - no problem, eh.

Good luck with your peaceful transition. Once the kids graduate college, you can start competing again. We'll grab Bret too - I see a sweet M60 4x4 in our future :)

I am wondering about a similar decision myself - especially last week, or at this time of year as all things come together at once. I don't want to fully make that commitment yet... So I guess it means I'm not quite ready yet. But maybe soon. Proud of you for it, and may it bring you many more years of great coaching/teaching and family life. With some fun running thrown in there too!
