I had a busy day and I slept through the snooze alarm this morning so I wasn't able to get out for a run until 5:45 this afternoon - maybe my least favorite time to run because it's the time I'd rather be relaxing with the family. Also I'm often tired and sluggish feeling in the late afternoon. It turned out to be a good run though. 9.25 miles in 1:09 around Sugarhouse and its environs.

I signed Andy up for this book club for first and second graders at The King's English bookshop here in Salt Lake. There are only two other kids in the group, both second grade girls. This month's book was Attack of the Shark-Headed Zombie. They met today to discuss the finer points of the book and while Andy was impressed with the reading ability of the two girls in the group, he blew them away with his observations about the shark-headed zombie and zombies in general.

Next month is a book about the Titanic. This will give him a chance to renew his Titanic obsession from last year.

8 year old's know way to much about Zombies. Did you see this Tim Burton Commercial? I loved it.

Have Abby and Andy read the Diary Of A Wimpy Kid books? According to Grace, they're pretty good. Mind you, Abby might have outgrown them by now.

Abby loves the wimpy kid books and the movies.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts regarding kids and reading. Do you follow the "anything is fine as long as they are reading something" school of thought?

Yes. I tried to get Grace reading 'posh' stuff but it didn't work too well. The Wimpy Kid stuff opened the door and then she started reading other stuff. She's now reading, The Boy In Striped Pajamas.

I've taught her quite a bit about narrative technique and story, which is helping her with her English compositions.

Although she does well in her weekly spelling tests, her spelling isn't too hot - mind you, mine is appllling:).

I think as her reading develops her spelling will improve. It's hard to get them reading with all of the other distractions. I've found that by coaxing her into reading at night, in bed, she's now in the habit. Sometimes I have to tell her to stop and go to sleep.

My wife reads all the kids books along with them so they can have dialog. I have no idea what sort of rubbish they're reading.

So far my kids, 9-11 are still into fantasy stuff like Harry Potter and Fable Haven.

Not that you were asking me, but most of my family is quite scholastic.
